Incumbent President Emomali Rahmon, who has been in office since 1992, reportedly had a landslide victory in the 2013 presidential election.

The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) announced the election preliminary results today morning.

According to the preliminary results, Emomali Rahmon won the presidential election with 83.6 percent of the vote, with his nearest challenger, Ismoil Talbakov from the Communist Party, garnering just 5 percent of the vote.

Tolibbek Bukhoriyev from the Agrarian Party reportedly received 4.5 percent, Olimjon Boboyev from the Party of Economic Reforms – 3.8 percent, Abduhalim Ghafforov from the Socialist Party – 1.5 percent, and Saidjaffar Ismonov from the Democratic Party – just 1 percent.   

The CCER says voter turnout in the 2013 presidential election was 86.6 percent.

The final results of the 2013 presidential election in Tajikistan will be announced in ten days.

The Social-Democrat Party (SDP) boycotted the poll, saying the election campaign had been held amid “violations of the constitution” and with “state-organized falsifications.”  The SDP accuses Tajik authorities of creating obstacles that prevented the Islamic Revival Party (IRP)’s candidate, Ms. Oynihol Bobonazarova, from successfully registering.

More than 6,000 local observers, including representatives of political parties that nominated candidates for president, the Union of Youth of Tajikistan, and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Tajikistan, monitored the presidential election.  Local observers were registered with all 68 district election commissions (DECs).

Besides, more than 370 representatives of local media have been accredited at the DECs to monitor the voting process.

According to the CCER, 501 international observers and 80 representatives of foreign media have been accredited at the CCER.

We will recall that in the 2006 presidential election Emomali Rahmon received nearly 80 percent of the vote.  The nearest challenger to Emomali Rahmon in the 2006 presidential election was Olimjon Boboyev of the Party of Economic Reforms, who officials said received about 7 percent.

Some leading opposition parties boycotted the 2006 presidential election, saying it was not democratic.
