On Friday November 15, the OSCE Office in Tajikistan presented an assessment on the social-economic impact of small hydroelectric power plants in the Rasht Valley of Tajikistan.
The assessment was conducted in two areas of the Rasht Valley, Rahimzoda and Tagoba, from March to October 2013 in collaboration with the Tajik-Norwegian Small Hydropower Development Center.
A team of experts reportedly examined the socio-economic development of the regions where small hydroelectric power plants exist, as well as the hydrological potential of the watercourse in the Rasht Valley. Based on detailed analysis of the collected data, proposals to the authorities to improve the region’s socio-economic situation were made.
“Taking into account the country’s great hydropower potential, this initiative is an important step towards sustainable development in Tajikistan,” said Hans Peter Larsen, the Deputy Head of the OSCE Office in Tajikistan.
“Energy is one of the main drivers for Tajikistan’s industry, agriculture, transport and telecommunications, and of course for the local development, especially in rural areas,” he said. “A clear picture of the social and economic impact of the small and mini hydroelectric power plants that the report provides can help the Tajik authorities and international organizations to develop programs to promote sustainable development of the country.”
More than 50 representatives of the authorities, international and local organizations, as well as experts involved in water and energy sectors participated in the seminar.
